Hey Everyone!
This is the final post about how to start speaking a second language.
Here’s a quick recap of steps #1-4.
#2 Some Beginning Steps to Take
#3 Learning to Speak (the basics)
#4 How to become more comfortable speaking and learn more vocabulary
Today is the final step which is actually multiple steps. #5 learn the material for A1-B2 in your target language.
This method is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and there are tons of resources built arouond this framework (including Lingoni which I mentioned earlier). It goes through to C2 if you want to continue with it. I’m currently studying at a B1 level (intermediate) and learning and reviewing some basics as well. I recommend this because it’s a very thorough way of learning a language. You can use another method, if you find something that works better for you.
Continue to study a little every day, or even 5-6 days a week with a brea over the weekend. I’m still learning to be consistent with my study and I personally believe that’s why i’m still intermediate instead of fluent.
Continue to practice speaking, every day is best but as much as possible is great too.
Keep yourself immersed in the language as much as possible. What do you already do in your everyday life that you can switch over to your target language? One easyway to do this is to change your phone or computer settings to your target language.
Build habits in your new language. For example, you could read your Bible in another language (I’ve been going through the kids Bible app in French), but other ways to make it easy could be reading the Proverbs of the day in the language you’re learning or listening to a little bit of the audio Bible (reading along is also helpful).
Practice writing. You can write out lists in the language you’re learning (grocery lists, to do lists, etc). You can journal, write out a proverb of the day, write a friend or a language exchange partner.
I know you’ll be speaking a second or third language soon! Let me know which of these tips was most helpful for you and if you have any other advice on learning another language, please feel free to leave it in the comments.
Have a good day!
Bonne journée!
