Lat week I shared step #1 to learning a second language. You need to know your why.
This week I’m sharing the basics, if you’re starting from zero this is what you’ll want to do next.
#2 Beginning Steps
Focus on listening, accent (choose one accent or dialect to stick with), the alphabet, basic words
Find a beginner’s language learning program you like. Study for like 10-30 minutes per day. It doesn’t matter if you used a paid program, find something at your local library, or use an app. It matters if you are consistent.
Watch videos and listen to lessons on how to pronounce words or make the sounds/accent in the language you’re learning. You can even just go to Forvo (an online language learning dictionary), listen and repeat.
Listen to music in the language. You can learn easy songs (like kid’s songs), and/or look up the lyrics and translations to find songs you like. It helps when you listen to genres you like and when you listen to enjoy.
Each week you can make like 5 flashcards or sticky notes of new words, put them around your house or apartment. Or you could also review them at a set time or take them with you to memorize throughout your day.
Find videos, movies, audio books, or podcasts that you like already. You can find your favorite movie and watch it in French, or start watching a French YouTube cooking channel even if you don’t understand all the words. Series are helpful because you’ll become familiar with the content over time. I enjoy watching a French lifestyle vlog and it’s helped improved my understanding so much. I went from only knowing a few words to understanding most of what was going on.
Have a good day!
