I remember that I was so excited about the idea of traveling the world. But, when I got my passport application I literally let it sit half finished for months before I completed it.
I don’t completely know why I was procrastinating so much. Maybe it’s the same reason why I haven’t put in a Visa application yet? But I do know that I had some fears that I was having trouble getting past.
I’m writing this post to encourage you to take that first step and fill out your application. Remember that people have traveled before, some kids even younger than you have gone halfway around the world and back. You aren’t the first person in the world to get a passport. It was a travel book that gave me that perspective and it really helped.
In the end I decided to go on a little group trip to Europe.
I know it will be helpful to at least one person knowing that if I could get a passport, they can too.
So basically there are three main things to keep in mind.
1. On the Application
What’s needed:
You can pick up an application at your local post office. It’s about two pages long. Fill out your name, birthdate, nationality, and the same information in regards to your parents. If you’ve had name change then put that info as well. You want to add an emergency contact. Don’t overthink it because once you get your passport you need to add your emergency contacts in pencil.
If you’re under 16 you’ll need written permission from a parent or guardian.
What’s optional:
Where you’re going and your expected date of travel. If you pay extra you can expedite your passport for a specific trip. It will take about a month as opposed to 2-3 months. It depends on how busy the processing center is.
2. The photo
I got my passport photo from Walgreens. It’s not very glamours. You’re supposed to have a neutral expression (no big smile), but you can do a small (not really noticible) smile if you like. I will link the photo requirements.
If you live in the United States, you can take your photo at: Walgreens, CVS, the post office, and even at home. It’s only a few dollars and it might not be very professional so don’t get frustrated. I ended up getting my photo retaken a few times. There needs to be a white background and there are a few other requirements which are listed on the website.
3. The Application Process
Once you have your passport application, photo, and a copy of your birth certificate and any other necessary information…take it over to the Post Office. Some offices require you schedule an appointment ahead of time. You can check on the status of your passport online or by calling in.
The main fee is $110 for the passport book and there are additional fees if you want a passport card ($30) or like I mentioned, if you want to expedite the process.
I look forward to hearing about your first passport. Let me know in the comments below if you are currently in the process of getting one or have just gotten one.
